April 16, 2019Settling in and Helping at Kids Day – 10/04/18
April 16, 2019By Maria Pia Rossi – 1 week volunteer
As one of the many activities in which I took part during the week, we went to visit the local school located 10 minutes walk away from the village. We went there to deliver a presentation to the kids from grade 1 to grade 6 about conserving the wild elephant population and how they help the ecosystem. This was the first, hopefully with many more, time that the Sanctuary did something like this with the school, where they usually just go to teach English classes to the kids.
The kids where really exited and they where involved through the hole talk. The talk was delivered by Kerri and Dti, two of the people that work in the Sanctuary. It was an animated talk, easy for the kids but which it contained all the key information about the elephants and the environment that the kids should know. I think the kids had a great time, playing some games and having some candy for the ones that could complete the quiz at the end.
I think it was a great opportunity, not only for me to see the school and how do the kids spend their days but for the kids too. They should be more aware of their environment and the things that are around them such as the elephants. Being in a community where elephants play such a big role it is a key thing that everyone knows their importance, conservation and benefits that they bring to the environment.
