My week at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary

Meg Dunne 1-week intern

Wow! What an incredible, insightful, meaningful and unforgettable experience this has been. It is hard to find the right words to say just what a lasting impression this week has left in me. I always dreamed of seeing elephants in their natural environment, after lots of research I found out about KSES and I took the leap and how thankful I am that I did! I left not only seeing elephants forage in their natural environment, I had the chance to help collect important data, as well as experience and be immersed in the heart of the Karen village. I had the opportunity to have a Karen lesson, teach English and play with the village children, as well as help out and give back to the Karen village. KSES not only does wonderful work for the elephants and the environment but provides opportunities to the whole community.

When I arrived on the Sunday I was met with the friendly staff where they showed me to my beautiful home stay. I learnt to cook with the home stay and throughout the week I ate the most delicious food! I loved the early morning hikes, with the crisp chill in the air, everyone excited to see the elephants! Kanda and the rest of the team are so knowledgeable, telling us about the plants, the land and the elephants. Each night we would eat altogether, sharing the delicious food from our home stays, then followed by a warm cup of tea and card games! I would sleep so well from the fresh air and hike during the day!

I leave feeling so grounded and even more in touch with nature. Being outside, sitting at the base camp with the sound of roosters, birds and the river flowing. I am so so grateful for all this week has filled me with, not just the elephants, but the nature, the village and the people. My heart is so full!
