My week as research intern at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary

Sofia 1 week research intern –

As an economics research fellow, I’m used to analyzing data and studying human behavior from an economic perspective. However, my week-long internship at KSES gave me a completely new experience. It was a chance to explore how research works in a different field—one that involves animals, nature, and local community.

One of the highlights of my time at KSES was learning how they collect and analyze data on elephant behavior, associations and biodiversity. They use a very impressive app that makes data collection simple and efficient. This showed me how technology can really enhance field research and it was fascinating to see how data can help us better understand these amazing animals.

Working with Laura and Jasmine, the passionate researchers and coordinators at KSES, was a true pleasure. Their love for the sanctuary and the elephants was evident in everything they did. They not only taught me a lot about the elephants but also inspired me with their dedication. It was clear that their work was much more than just a job—it was a mission to make a difference.

Another unforgettable part of my stay was living with a local family in the nearby Karen village. My homestay, Nee, welcomed me very warmly. I’ll never forget waking up to the smell of pancakes in the morning, a moment that reminded me of my own family back home.

Overall, my week at Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary was an incredible experience. It opened my eyes to a different kind of research, one that combines science, conservation, and community. I left with a deeper understanding of the balance between humans and nature, and with memories that I’ll treasure forever.

Thank you, KSES, for this amazing experience, and a special thanks to Laura, Jasmine, Nee and everyone I met. I hope to return someday and continue this journey.
